About St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
Since 1957, the congregation of St. Stephen’s has faithfully worshiped our Lord in the city of Spokane. Over the years, since its beginning, we have erected our beautiful and beloved church to God’s honor and glory. We are proud of our tradition both as Episcopalians and as part of the religious fabric of this city.
What is St. Stephen’s?
We are an extended family, a group of people who share a common life together as members of the Body of Christ. St. Stephen’s is a parish of the Episcopal Church, a part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Our heritage comes specifically from the Church of England, but we are heirs to the whole tradition of the universal, or catholic, Church.
Gathered in the Name of Christ…
Our life together has one goal: to know Jesus Christ as Lord and to make him known in the world. We seek to do this by living out our Christian commitment in the world, by offering to Christ’s church our time, our money, and our talents, and by gathering together over and over again to share and proclaim our faith.
We believe that God has made humankind and, seeking to show us that our only true home and happiness is in God, God became one of us in the person of Jesus, the Christ. And we believe that when God’s faithful people assemble in God’s name, Christ is still among us. We therefore come together in God’s Church to glorify God and to worship in Christ’s name.
A Sacramental and Liturgical Church…
Different parts of the Christian church have developed different ways of celebrating the Christian faith. The Episcopal Church cherishes its sacramental and liturgical tradition as the fullest expression of God’s presence to us.
We are sacramental because we believe that the sacraments are signs that communicate God’s presence to us, and we order our common worship around the various sacraments of the Church.
We are liturgical because our faith is centered on the worship of God in God’s church, and in our worship we create an environment that enriches the experience of God’s majesty and love. We also believe that all of the people of God are called to participate in the life of the worshiping community and especially in its worship. The term “liturgy” comes from the Greek meaning “the work of the people,” and we believe that our worship services, our liturgies, do indeed depend on “the work of the people.”
In the rich liturgical tradition of the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer contains forms, directions, and suggestions for ordering our common celebrations of God’s ever-present love.
